Kim Garcia, M.S., CCC-SLP
Speech-Language Pathologist

I’m a licensed and certified Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) who specializes in treating young children with communication delays and disorders. I strive to provide family centered services that improve the lives of children by addressing their total communication needs. My therapy relies on the foundation of building relationships with my patients and their families along with promoting self-confidence, trust, and regulation. When a child feels safe, regulated, and confident with a trusted therapist, communication can thrive.

I have over 20 years of experience working with families as an speech therapist. I founded North Star Pediatric Speech Therapy PLLC in 2019 to offer personal and specialized family-centered speech therapy services to the Greater Houston Area. I am committed to serving kids who need it the most and supporting their families.

I have a passion for treating children with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS), neurodivergent populations, and children with speech sound and language delays. I take pride in my diverse clinical experiences and my ability to use these, along with evidence-based approaches, to provide the highest quality of care.

General FAQs

Do you accept insurance?

At this time, North Star Pediatric Speech Therapy PLLC does not accept insurance and is private pay only. Parents may choose to submit paid invoices to seek reimbursement. Superbills (a paid medical receipt) are sent to all caregivers for potential reimbursement. North Star Pediatric Speech Therapy PLLC cannot guarantee reimbursement of any services from insurance providers and does not contact insurance companies directly.

What are your fees and how do I pay?

For all out-of-network/private pay clients, we are confident that our therapy rates are affordable when compared to other private pay specialty speech therapists in the area.

Payment is due at the time of your child’s session. Weekly balances must be paid prior to scheduling additional visits. Payments can be made by cash, check, or credit card including FSA/HSA cards. Electronic payments can be made using your online account

Therapy is getting expensive. Do you ever offer reduced rates?

We get it: the cost of things add up and the price for specialist appointments can be costly. We do not want the cost of therapy to be a burden to your family nor do we want the price of therapy to get in the way of your child getting the therapy they need. The ability to communicate, however, is truly priceless. Your child’s ability to communicate opens doors to success in ways that are immeasurable and adds undeniably to their quality of life. Your child will not need therapy forever, but their ability to communicate will last a lifetime.

Each year we are able to offer a limited number of discounted sessions via partial scholarships for therapy services. Please contact us if you are interested in learning more.

A number of our families are able to obtain assistance in paying for therapy. Depending on your child’s needs, diagnosis and/or your family situation, you may find financial support through one or more of the following funding programs:

Small Steps in Speech

The Apraxia Foundation

The Orange Effect Foundation Grant for Speech Therapy

UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation

I’m waiting for services specific to Apraxia/Motor Speech at North Star Pediatric Speech Therapy. What can I do in the meantime?

We offer free 15 minute phone consultations scheduled by appointment. During this phone call, we may be able to provide you with useful resources to assist you and your child while you wait for CAS/Motor Speech services to become available.

Waiting also provides an opportunity to have your child’s hearing tested and to gather related diagnostic testing (ex. Language, psychology, dental). You can request that a copy of the test results be sent to us to add to your child’s file.

We also offer professional consultations for a fee for you, your child’s current SLP, or teachers to offer support for their current ongoing treatment plan.

What are “intensive services”?

Depending on your child’s needs during their speech journey at North Star Pediatric Speech Therapy, different services models may be offered. Weekly and twice-weekly 30 minute therapy sessions are most common, but we also offer intensive services for families who may be looking to boost their child’s progress or are traveling to the clinic from a great distance.

Daily or twice-daily services are considered “intensive” services and are offered at a reduced rate.

Intensive services are often a great option for families in the summer months, especially if they are traveling to the clinic from a distance.

Do you provide in-home or private school therapy services?

Our “Little Red” car has logged close to 175K Texas and Pennsylvania miles traveling to patients over the past 15 years. Little Red needs a break. For this reason we are only able to see a handful of patients in their homes.

If your child has complex medical needs that make traveling difficult, therapy at home may be an option. In-home appointments are prioritized for children who would require a nurse or additional caregiver for transportation to the office.

When available, home – based therapy sessions are typically scheduled for 45-60 minutes and have an additional cost.

Email us at info@northstarpediatricspeechtherapy.com to discuss your current situation and needs.

What if the time offered for assessment or therapy is during my child’s nap time or school day?

We do our best to offer weekday appointment times based on client preference, and most importantly, to avoid nap times. If you cannot attend an assessment time that is offered, while you will not lose your spot on our waiting list, you will have a longer wait. We will contact you when another time becomes available.

Our after-school openings are in very high demand, often booked months in advance. Many of our families understand that taking their child out of school in order to attend speech-language therapy is necessary and contributes to overall academic progress.

We believe that missing occasional school time in the early years is much less detrimental to our clients than having speech-language skills impact learning, literacy, language and academic performance in later school years.

What happens in the cases of inclement weather, canceled buses or school closures due to weather?

We are pleased to offer virtual therapy should inclement weather make travel to the clinic unsafe. In a case where you can not make it to the clinic due to circumstances out of your control, we ask for as much notice as possible so we can set up your virtual link and password and email it to you. The cost for virtual services are the same as in-person sessions.

If inclement weather causes the closure of area school districts the clinic may also be closed. In cases of extreme weather or widespread power outages, we will contact scheduled patients as soon as possible and any changes to operation hours will be posted across my social media channels.

What to expect when visiting North Star Pediatric Speech Therapy

My GPS took me to a church and preschool instead of your clinic. Help!

Rest assured you’re in the right place! Our clinic space is located on the second floor (Suite #202) of the education building (left side facing the church). The entrance to the clinic is between Johnson Memorial Preschool and the main entrance to the church. There’s a North Star Speech sign at the door. Go ahead and ring the bell!

Can my other children come with me?

Yes, other family members are welcome to tag along. We have a family lounge area with access to books, toys, water, snacks, and wifi. Bathrooms can be found at each end of the hall.

What should I bring with me to my initial appointment?

Before your initial appointment you will have completed a number of online forms and sent us any reports or documents about your child that will help your SLP get to know them.

Please bring in new documentation relevant to your child’s development or send a copy to us (e.g. IEP, hearing assessment, therapy report, medical report, etc.).

You may wish to bring a small toy or favorite item to help your child transition into the clinic for the initial visit.

If your session is booked for more than one hour, you may wish to bring neat and nut-free snacks for your child.

What does a speech-language therapy session look like?

Therapy sessions are very individualized to your child, so everyone’s session looks different. At any given time, we might help you (the caregiver) understand and learn strategies to help your child’s communication skills by trying things out together through play. We may also be teaching your child a new sound combination by using lots of different cues and techniques and sharing these with you.

Play is an integral part of therapy so we strive to keep your child highly engaged with fun materials, movement, music and sensory based activities.

Speech and language therapy can be hard work! So your child might be tired or drained, or need some time to decompress afterward.

Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) & Motor Speech Disorders

What does an evaluation for CAS or a motor speech disorder look like?

To identify the presence of a motor speech disorder like CAS, a child must be able to produce verbal speech on demand and have a repertoire of spontaneous utterances they use with frequency.

A motor-speech evaluation is specific to the planning and programming of speech. A motor speech evaluation consists of an oral mechanism examination, motor speech assessment, phonological/articulation assessment, and language assessment. If your child is suspected of having CAS or dysarthria, we am qualified to confirm or rule-out the diagnosis.

At what age is Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) usually diagnosed?

CAS is typically identified as a possible concern between 18-36 months of age but it’s important to know that CAS is based on the speech skills (or lack thereof) of a child, not by the age of the child.

Some children show the necessary characteristics or symptoms as young as 24 months, while other children have not acquired enough speech sound production skill until much later.

The differential diagnosis process for CAS can take time, and be complex; determining that a child has the characteristics of CAS rather than other possible disorders is an advanced clinical skill and can only be done by a well trained speech pathologist.
